Tuscaloosa High School Will Allow Same Sex Couples At Prom

Christian Nelsen (left) & Caleb Jett (right) at their senior prom in Maine
Via ThinkProgress:

The Southern Poverty Law Center has helped achieve a big victory for gay students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama: same-sex couples will be welcome at prom. The question came up in January when 10th-grader Elizabeth Garret wore a sweatshirt that read, “Warning, This Individual Infected With ‘The Gay,’ Proceed With Caution.” A school administrator demanded she take the sweatshirt off because it was “distracting,” and also informed her that same-sex couples could not attend the prom. In addition to allowing an inclusive prom, the district has also now recognized the right of students to wear clothes that support the acceptance of LGBT people.

Harvard Student Shows Homosexuality And Christianity Are Not Incompatible

Matthew Vines
Personally, I don't care what the bible says about homosexuality.  I used to care and I felt the need to reconcile this issue for myself.  I read several books including John Boswell's Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality: Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century.

Maybe, I don't care because I did the research.  Either way, this is a very thoughtful and reasoned presentation by a very intelligent young man.  Good for him!!

Via ThinkProgress:

When Harvard student Matthew Vines came out as gay his sophomore year, he was “relieved and crushed” — crushed specifically because he worried he wouldn’t be welcome in his Kansas hometown. Not content to accept condemnation from his conservative Christianity, Vines took a leave of absence from college to thoroughly study the supposed conflict between homosexuality and the Bible. Earlier this month, he presented the results of his research in an hour-long lecture at a Methodist church in Wichita, addressing every Bible verse that can possibly be interpreted to cast judgment upon people who are gay. The results can be watched on YouTube, but here is a trailer that previews his powerful speech:

Jason Biggs Bottoms For An Angry Apple Pie

Via Unicorn Booty:

Jason Biggs unwittingly set off a cultural wave of teenage boys making sweet, sweet love to apple pies when he plunged into that pastry thirteen years ago in the first American Pie movie.
But pies have feelings too, and they don’t take kindly to being violated by the thousands.
So to quote the anthropomorphized desert in this Funny or Die clip, “Your ass is mine, Biggs!” Watch in terror and delight as Jason Biggs bottoms out for a nightmarish apple pie seeking his revenge.

Anti Gay National Organization For Marriage Wanted To Fan A Race War

NOM President Brian Brown
New documents reveal that the anti-gay marriage group NOM wanted to drive a wedge between African Americans and white gays over gay marriage.  They even used the words "fanning the hostility" with regard to their strategy.

Via AmericaBlog:

It's not like we didn't think this was happening, but, wow, it's really ugly to see it in writing. As John notes on the main AMERICAblog home page, the religious right wanted to fan a race war, and they admitted it in writing.  Ben Smith at Buzzfeed calls the documents "explosive".

Earlier tonight, Alvin McEwen tipped me off about some court documents that revealed NOM's strategy. It's ugly. From Alvin:
The National Organization for Marriage's unsuccessful fight to skirt Maine's financial disclosure laws just backfired majorly on the group by revealing a distasteful part of its game plan to stop marriage equality.

According to a court document that was uploaded online, NOM specifically worked to drive a wedge between the black and gay community on the subject of marriage equality
Here's the key passage about gays and blacks (and there's also a strategy for Latinos):
The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks - two key democratic constituencies. We aim to find, equip, energize and connect African American spokespeople for marriage; to develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; and to provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots. No politician wants to take up and push an issue that splits the base of the party. Fanning the hostility raised in the wake of Prop 8 is key...
They mean hostility between African-Americans and white gays.

Gay Couple Arrested On Gay Cruise Speak Out

Dennis Mayer (left) and John Hart.
There have been very different reactions to this story based on the information that has been available.  There were the initial story reporting, where all we heard was "gay couple arrested for having sex on cabin balcony".  Now we know that is not accurate and, yes, a homophobic country may have overreacted because these were 2 men.  Let's see what other information presents itself.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- A Southern Californian said Friday that he and his partner were taunted, humiliated and subjected to inhumane treatment when they were arrested and jailed after being escorted off a gay cruise in the Caribbean this week.
Dennis Jay Mayer, 53, told The Associated Press that he has no doubt they were arrested in Dominica because they were gay. Police said it was because they were seen having sex in public on the balcony of their ship cabin. He said they were not having sex, but were "partially clothed."
Mayer, a retired deputy sheriff, spoke to the AP in San Juan, where he and his partner of 17 years, John Robert Hart, arrived after being released following their guilty plea to indecent exposure.
"The total experience was horrendous," he said. "They told us that they did not like us, that they did not like gay people."
Dominica is among several Caribbean islands that have laws prohibiting sex between men.
The trouble began shortly after the cruise ship Celebrity Summit docked Wednesday morning at Dominica in the eastern Caribbean. Mayer and Hart were in their room when they got a call from a cruise ship official.
"We were summoned that the captain wished to speak to us," Mayer said. "We were caught off guard."
Three cruise ship officials and six Dominica police officers were waiting for them. After police interviewed both men separately, the assistant captain spoke, Mayer said.
"At this time, we are going to eject you from the ship. We have zero tolerance toward your behavior," Mayer recalled him saying.

ABC's What Would You Do?: Anti Gay Bridal Shop

Real life lesbian bride-to-be Alix Genter
The ABC show "What Would You Do" is really doing a job on homophobia and showing how unacceptable it least in New Jersey!

Via The Advocate:

Last year, New Jersey woman Alix Genter was turned away from a bridal salon after proprietors found out that she was not marrying a man, but instead committing to another woman.

ABC News decided to see what other people would do if faced with the situation of shopping in a bridal salon with another woman who was turned away because of her sexual orientation. The reoccurring special, "What Would You Do?," pits actors in compromising, uncomfortable public situations to see how bystanders would react. This week's scenario took place at a bridal shop in New Jersey, where a lesbian customer is being turned away.

Madonna Plans Gay Civil Disobedience In Russia

This could get very interesting!  Now that she has announced her intentions to speak out for gay equality in St. Petersburg this coming August, what will government officials there do?  Will they somehow block the concert from happening?  Will they wait until she makes pro gay statements and then attempt to prosecute her for violating the new law?  I know I will be watching!!
Madonna will use her upcoming performance in Russia to speak out against St. Petersburg's controversial "gay propaganda" law.
"I will come to St. Petersburg to speak up for the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed," the Material Girl, 53, told Bloomberg Businessweek in an email yesterday. "I'm a freedom fighter."
Madonna's announcement came on the heels of the release of her new "Girl Gone Wild" video, which features barely-dressed male dancers in sweaty, homoerotic embraces. The track is the second single off the pop star's forthcoming album "MDNA," which has already been hailed as "a collection of thoroughly pumping pop tunes, some of which are slices of sheer brilliance," by Billboard magazine.
"I don’t run away from adversity," Madonna, who is scheduled to perform in St. Petersburg on Aug. 9, said in the email. "I will speak during my show about this ridiculous atrocity."
Last month, St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko signed the controversial law, which effectively criminalizes reading, writing, speaking or reporting on anything related to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people. Violators of the law -- which outlaws all LGBT Pride events -- reportedly could face fines anywhere between 5,000 ($171) and 500,000 rubles ($17,000).
The law states that LGBT "propaganda" promotes "the false perception that traditional and nontraditional relationships are socially equal," according to Bloomberg.

The author of the "gay propaganda" bill in St. Petersburg is threatening to attend Madonna's concert and prosecute if necessary.

Via TowleRoad:

He man behind St. Petersburg, Russia's gay "propaganda" bill is threatening Madonna over her plans to speak out against the law when she comes to the city for a concert, ABC News reports. The bill’s author, city assemblyman Vitaly Milanov, says he wants Madonna charged under the new law if she speaks out against it during her concert. He said he was willing to attend the show “to control its moral content.”

“I’m ready to personally suffer a couple of hours of her concert,” he told the Russian Interfax news agency.

New Hampshire House Rejects GOP Led Repeal Of Marriage Equality

I am truly fascinated with the world view of homophobes, especially in this day and age.  Do they have no sense of history.  Do they not see themselves as the modern day equivalents of George Wallace in the civil rights era.  I guarantee you everyone else will.  Their children will.  Your children will.  Historians and novelists and readers of their books will.  Hopefully, for their sake, they will come to a point of reflection and regret their choices in the same way that Wallace himself did.  The "choice" is theirs and history's judgement of their bigotry will or will not be tempered by that choice.

We have reached a tipping point that can not be reversed.  What really fascinates me are the holdouts.  Today, in the New Hampshire House, they're were much fewer "holdouts" than expected.  This is a Republican-led body that could not even gather a majority, let alone a veto proof majority.
Via The Advocate:

A Republican-led effort to repeal marriage equality in New Hampshire decisively failed today. Lawmakers voted against the repeal, against replacing marriage with civil unions, and against putting marriage rights up to a voter referendum.

Democratic Gov. John Lynch
Just to ensure the message was clear, Republican representative Seth Cohn, who supports marriage equality, proposed banning marriage between left-handed people. That didn't pass either. The final vote was 211-116 to kill a bill that would have rescinded marriage equality in the state, and the votes against the repeal included several Republicans, such as Cohn, who broke with their party.

Gov. John Lynch signed marriage equality legislation in 2009 after it narrowly passed through the legislature, and he has promised to veto any effort to repeal the law. It would have needed to pass through both Republican-led chambers before reaching his desk.

But the bill, introduced by state representative David Bates, couldn't muster the votes to pass the House, let alone come anywhere near the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.

Probably Gay, the Homophobia Song - Katie Goodman's Broad Comedy

This song is wonderful!!  It makes the obvious point that if you are vocally homophobic, you're probably gay.

Rick Santorum "Praying" For Dan Savage...Isn't that special!!

Rick Santorum
I love when the hate monger feels the need to pray for the person who calls out his hatred.
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said he is "praying" for gay rights activist and syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage, who launched a campaign to redefine the former Pennsylvania senator's last name into a sexual neologism, in an interview with the website RealClearReligion published Monday.
When asked what he would say to Savage, he said, "I would tell him that I'm praying for him. He obviously has some serious issues. You look at someone like that who can say and do the things that he's doing and you just pray for him and hopefully he can find peace."...
...Savage targeted Santorum over his infamous comments in 2003 on homosexuality and "man on dog" sex. A website linking his name to a sexual neologism was created and rose to the top of search engine results. His presidential campaign has made the site fall somewhat in search results, but it still remains near the top of Google results for his name.
Dan Savage
Dan Savage Responds
"Rick Santorum thinks that women who have been raped should be compelled—by force of law—to carry the babies of their rapists to term, he thinks birth control should be illegal, he wants to prosecute pornographers, etc., etc., basically the guy wants to be president so that he can micromanage the sex lives of all Americans...and I'm the one with issues? Because I made a dirty joke at his expense eight or nine years ago and it stuck? I'm the one with issues? Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. Rick can pray for me. I'll gay for him. And we can call it even." - Dan Savage, responding to Santorum's claim that he prays for Dan.

Radical Preacher Tells Liberals and Non-Christians "Get Out" While Rick Santorum Applauds

Santorum Supporter Dennis Terry
So, this is what modern day mainstream republican thinking is.  Read this carefully.  It is all you need to know about today's GOP.  They hate everyone that is different from themselves.  Even more so, they think that if you are not like them, you are destroying the country.  This is the most un-american quote I've seen in a long time.

"I don't care what the liberals say, I don't care what the naysayers say, this nation was founded as a Christian nation...There is only one God and his name is Jesus. I'm tired of people telling me that I can't say those words.. Listen to me, If you don't love America, If you don't like the way we do things I have one thing to say - GET OUT. We don't worship Buddha, we don't worship Mohammad, we don't worship Allah, we worship God, we worship God's son Jesus Christ."
In a revival type speech, Greenwell Springs Baptist Church pastor Rev. Dennis Terry introduced Family Research Council president Tony Perkins and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Christians, according to Rev. Terry, are the conscience of the state and even the key to turning the economy around. The pastor offered some pointed words about abortion, gay marriage, and prayer in schools, shouting about 'sexual perversion' and putting God back in Washington, D.C., as Senator Santorum was seen clapping, if not cheering, in the background.
Watch the video

Update Via ABC News:

Santorum said he did not clap when the pastor made these comments.

“I didn’t clap when he said that. I do remember him saying that, I said, well, I wasn’t quite sure he was saying it for himself, I wasn’t quite listening to everything to be honest with you. But I wasn’t sure whether he was speaking for himself or speaking generally, but I didn’t clap when he said that because it’s not how I feel.”

Chow Down At Chik Fil A...No Way!! But Great Video!!

I bet Chick-Fil-A hates this!!

Rick Santorum Rails Against "Hard-Core Pornography"

The Modern Day GOP Mascot
I, like many others, think the GOP got their mascot wrong.  They want to bury their collective heads in the sand and ignore reality.  They want to pretend that global warming doesn't exist and is not, in part, caused by man made issues.  They want to pretend that evolution doesn't exist.  They want to pretend that gays don't exist or, at least can change themselves to being not-gay.
Obviously, the "O" in GOP should stand for Ostrich.
Yes, for Rick Santorum, porn is one of the most pressing matters facing our country.  I think Rick simply doesn't want any evidence that people have sex other than the birth of children.  I'm sure he doesn't want there to be evidence of a certain type of sex...poor Santorum.  In this instance, he wants to ignore the fact that men like to watch porn and the sky hasn't fallen as a result.
Rick Santorum has garnered quite a bit of attention recently for his animated remarks against pornography, and on two separate Sunday shows the Republican presidential candidate refused to cede an inch, doubling down on his crusade against “hard-core pornography.”
A recently added section on the candidate’s website declares that America is “suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography,” and laments that the “Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws.” The site goes on to say that the Justice Department “seems to favor pornographers over children and families.”
Oh, yes I did!!
Asked to defend this odd claim, Santorum argued Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union that the Justice Department is not enforcing pornography laws as rigorously as President George W. Bush’s DOJ did.
“Well you have to look at the proof that’s in the prosecution. Under the Bush administration, pornographers were prosecuted much more rigorously under existing law than they are under the Obama administration,” Santorum said. “My conclusion is they have not put a priority on prosecuting these cases, and in doing so, they are exposing children to a tremendous amount of harm. And that to me says they’re putting the un-enforcement of this law and putting children at risk as a result of that.”

Mother Defends Her 7 Year Old Gay Son

I knew I was gay when I was about 4.  I didn't know what to call it or how to define it.  It was a different time and I didn't even know who or what to ask about it.  It thrills me that in some areas of this country, parents like this are raising such brave and self aware children.  What a wonderful mom!
My son was in another room talking to the big kids. They were fourth graders, 9- and 10-year-olds who are very cool, hip, and mature (according to my kid, anyway). They were a mix of girls and boys, and most of the girls were talking about which boys they thought were cute, and who was whose boyfriend or girlfriend. The boys were frequently providing commentary.
My son piped up, "Blaine is my boyfriend." (Blaine is a gay male character on Glee.)
"You're supposed to have a girlfriend," one of girls snapped back, all snotty.
My kid shook his head. "No, I'm gay," he said. "I have boyfriends." Giggles came from all the girls, and one of the boys looked at him quizzically.
"Really?" the boy asked.
"Sure," said my son with a shrug. And the conversation moved on to the music on everyone's iPods.
As I watched this conversation happen, two things went through my mind:
  1. I am going to have to talk to some parents.
  2. I am going to have to explain to my son, again, why he doesn't need an iPod.
I am finding myself having a lot of conversations with parents lately. Part of me is annoyed that I feel I should, but the larger part of me knows it's necessary. So why I am I annoyed? Because I really don't think it should be a big deal. My son isn't hitting or biting people. He isn't a danger to anyone. He's just sharing something about himself. Other parents don't have special conversations when their kids turn out to be left-handed (coincidentally, left-handed people about 10 percent of the population, as well). And to me, being left-handed is just about as morally wrong as being gay: not at all. So why should I have to alert people that my son identifies as gay?
But I do, and it is for a few good reasons, the top of one being that my son is only 7 years old. An out first grader isn't exactly an average kid. I have the only one I know. It surprises people, and they have questions:
"Why does he say that?"
"Does he know what that means?"
"Haven't you told him to not say that?"
The questions are so common now that I can rattle off the answers without much thought:
"Because he likes boys, thinks they're pretty, and romanticizes them."
"Yes, he knows that boys who want to kiss boys and want to marry boys are gay."
"Hell no! I will never tell my child to stop saying something that honestly describes him, or even imply there is anything wrong with being gay."

For Many Gays And Lesbians, Our Pets Are Our Children

John Bartlett and friends
This is such a great story.  So many of us are so busy making up for lost time, figuring out who we are, that we forget to find ourselves by serving others.  In this case, fashion designer John Bartlett chooses to serve our 3 legged friends... well, at least in one instance with his dog Tiny Tim.
Nine years ago, on my 40th birthday, I rescued a homeless dog named Tiny Tim, who ended up rescuing me right back. Tiny Tim was a voracious and scrappy German Shepherd/Labrador/Pit Bull mix who was struck by a car on Christmas Eve, resulting in the amputation of his front leg. When I met him at the North Shore Animal League four months after his operation, it was love at first hairy sight.
As a gay man with no inclination for children, I had always been drawn to dogs, and as a 40-year-old single man (at the time), I wanted to do something with impact, move out of my comfort zone, and be responsible for another creature besides myself for once. Adopting a homeless pet was the solution for me, and almost instantly upon meeting Tiny Tim, my life began to take shape for the first time. It gave me a sense of being needed, a knowledge that something outside myself depended on me solely for its happiness and basic survival. In many ways it was my first step into adulthood.
My world opened up in ways I could never have imagined once Tiny Tim was at my side. People whom I had never spoken to came up to me to ask about Tim and his missing front leg. In fact, I had passed many of these same people countless times on the street without even a "hello." Living in a "gayborhood" like Chelsea and the West Village, Tiny Tim (and I) met many gay and lesbian dog owners, particularly rescue-dog owners, and I was welcomed to a wonderful network of information and support from other people who shared the honor of raising these deserving creatures. The dog park became my social circle, and nine years later, many of these same dog owners are my closest friends.
My partner and I are doing our part.  We have 2 rescue dogs and 1 rescue cat.  We regularly contribute to The Humane Society.  We will never have children but we will always have our babies!
You can help by purchasing some great apparel from the Tiny Tim Collection or donating to the Tiny Tim Rescue Fund.
